Plant an instant early spring pot

-

Plant up a pot for instant spring colour using plants and bulbs that are in flower. This pot has wallflowers and pansies with narcissus, but you could use forget-menots, primulas or bellis with muscari and chionodoxa. It is a temporary display that can be dismantled after spring and planted with summer flowers instead, so it’s fine to crowd the plants in. The pot will look better with no gaps between the plants and you’ll still get great results.

Use an open-structured, peat-free potting compost, which will keep air around the roots while retaining enough moisture to sustain growth. With such a high density of roots in the pot, it will need regular watering. Check it most days if you can. Deadheading the flowers as they go over will keep it looking good for the longest time, too.

When it’s time to replace the plants for the summer, save the bulbs, snip off the flower heads and let them die back on newspaper somewhere dry, for planting in the garden in autumn.
