Ingrid’s top veg for small spaces

-

Runner beans

These are super easy to grow vertically, freeing up space for other vegetables in the same area. Sow now in 7cm pots on your windowsill, ready to plant out in late May/June.

Tomatoes

Ideal for containers, just one tomato plant will produce fruit throughout the summer. Sow now in modules and keep on a sunny windowsill. Plant into a sunny spot in June after all danger of frost has passed.

Asian greens

This is a range of vegetables that includes Chinese broccoli, pak choi and choy sum – all are quick growers and great in stirfries. Sow in modules now or late summer and plant out when they are 5cm tall.

Courgettes

Every vegetable garden needs a courgette plant. One will produce enough to feed you for the entire season. Sow now in 7cm pots on your windowsill, plant out into large containers or raised beds in June once the frosts have cleared.

Salad leaves

Fast growing and taking up little space, salad leaves are great for interplanting between crops and are perfect in a trough or container. You can direct sow now until June and harvest through the season, or sow in modules indoors and plant out once they are about 5cm tall.
