STEP BY STEP Propagate sedums from cuttings

SELECT the best shoots for cuttings by taking them from the edges of the parent plant. Pull them away gently and you may get some with roots already emerging.

PINCH the lowest leaves off to clear the base. Leave the cuttings on a clean surface for an hour or two to dry out, to prevent them rotting before they’ve rooted.

MAKE sure the cuttings have a long anchoring stem to root into the compost. Mix John Innes compost with an equal amount of horticultu­ral grit and fill small pots.

MAKE holes using a pencil and lower the brittle stems in. Firm the compost. If the stems are fragile lay them on the compost and cover with a layer of grit. Water them in.
