Which plants will thrive in a classroom that is cold overnight?

- Anna, Kent

MATTHEW SAYS This is a great question, as people often don’t consider overnight temperatures when they place houseplants in areas other than their own homes. For a northor east-facing classroom, an aspidistra – also known as the cast iron plant – is a good choice, as is a Swiss cheese plant

(Monstera deliciosa), which, despite its tropical look, is quite cold tolerant. For a sunnier room, the elephant’s foot plant

(Beaucarnea recurvata) is an indestructible choice, as is

Yucca elephantipes. For a smaller, sunny windowsill, succulents tend to be easy and low maintenance, especially echeverias.
