How can I control slugs in my heavy wet soil?

- David Coombs, South Wales

PIPPA SAYS I would suggest a couple of things. The easiest way to deal with them is to use biological control nematodes. These are simply applied as a drench using a watering can or a hose-end applicator. Each pack contains millions of microscopic nematodes, which swim through the soil moisture to reach the slugs. I have used these for many years and my slug population has declined as a result, and indeed in some drier years I haven’t applied them at all. They can be applied once soil temperatures are warm enough, but you may need to reapply a couple of months later.

Once you’ve reduced the slug population living in the soil, you could consider creating raised beds containing soil that is free of slugs and their eggs. Try self-adhesive copper tape stuck right around the vertical face of the raised bed, close to the top.
