Using your eco seed tray
Wooden seed trays look handsome and seedlings seem to like them better than plastic: wood is porous and lets air and water flow through freely, creating a more natural environment for baby roots. But there’s no need to buy fancy wooden trays – they’re easy to make. You can sow shallow-rooted crops like lettuces and leeks straight into them.
1
USE the wood from an old pallet to make two long sides, 38cm x 5cm, and two short sides, 24cm x 5cm. Nail these together securely to form a box.
2
CUT two pieces of second-hand fenceboard, 38cm x 12cm and nail them to the box to make the base, leaving a slight gap for drainage.
3
LINE the base of the tray with several layers of newspaper, then fill with compost and start sowing!
