Plant out chillies

-

Chillies do best in free-draining, fertile soil, so prepare the site by digging in organic matter, plus extra grit if the soil is heavy. Pop the plant into a hole larger than the current pot, back-fill and firm in. Add a 1m cane close to the plant for support – it will grow heavy with fruit – then water in deeply.

When growing in pots, choose a loam-based John Innes potting compost, which already has sand in the mix to improve drainage.

Chillies do well in terracotta pots. Soak plants before potting and press a bamboo cane down to the bottom of the pot, then water.
