This is a new take on the traditional kitchen garden, with areas for cooking as well as for dining. The design uses a series of planters arranged at different heights to make the garden accessible to all generations. The planters alternate with ground planting, forming the informal boundary around the garden. A cantilevered pergola creates vertical structure and a framing device for the seating area. Fruit trees such as fig, espaliered conference pear and apple provide fruits for picking while the planters are filled with herbs, vegetables and edible flowers such as nasturtiums. Perennials in shades of mauve, orange and burgundy are woven among the edibles, while Osmanthus domes anchor the scheme.
