AMBER RUDD HOME SECRETARY
Hatred directed against anyone because of their sexual orientation is utterly unacceptable and has no place whatsoever in a Britain that works for everyone. I’m extremely proud of the rich diversity of our society and the shared values and tolerance that underpin it.
Our Hate Crime Action Plan sets out robust steps to eradicate hate crime against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT+) victims. These include prevention through education, increasing reporting, and improving support for victims.
We’re working with community groups to develop resources for victims to specifically meet the needs of
LGBT+ communities and sharing good practice across the LGBT Hate Crime Consortium.
It’s important that victims feel empowered to come forward. That’s why we are encouraging prosecutors to pursue tougher sentences with the aim of improving confidence in the response to such crimes and, in turn, boosting reporting rates.
Alongside this, support for victims is paramount. The government and police are working with CATCH (Community Alliance to Combat Hate), led by Galop, to ensure all victims have access to the right support and advice.
This government’s commitment to tackle hate crime is underpinned by some of the strongest legislation in the world. Together, by standing against hate and for tolerance, we can build a better and more united Britain.
