Celebrity Edge.

- Words William J Connolly

With state-of-the-art technology, rooms that could rival even the best back on shore and exquisite first class dining, billion-dollar cruise ship Celebrity Edge is cutting through the competition to mark itself as a contender for the world’s very best. But a billion-dollar cruise ship we hear you cry?! It is an almost incomprehensible idea, but it’s set to define a new era in the world of luxury travel – as were lucky enough to climb aboard, set sail and see just how brilliant Celebrity Edge is.

Proclaiming proudly they wanted to bring the outside in, guest feedback has helped dictate the living quarters on Edge into pockets of minimalism versus modern style – and a large bathroom with a walk-in shower. Merging your traditional balcony area into the room itself, the continuation between the inside and out creates an extension of your room without having to compromise something elsewhere. Via the push of a button, your personal balcony window opens up to a cooling breeze of sea air – around 27% larger to be exact. The infinite balcony as it is known might seem like a simple concept, but as with many things with Edge, it’s minimalism that makes the most waves come rain or (hopeful) shine. Waking up to a floor-to-ceiling open balcony sunrise and without leaving your room? Into it. And if that doesn’t impress, interior design by the world-famous Kelly Hoppen is sure to tick every box.

As with every ship, Edge offers a selection of upgrades and rooms to cater for those going full out. Alongside the Staterooms, it houses the impressive splitlevel Duplex Edge Villas with an open large balcony, curtained glass-wall to the outside world, and living quarters likely larger than your actual home. And for those really looking to impress, the premium top Iconic Suites and their 2,500sq ft of heaven will allow you to ooze some serious Instagram level of opulence. You really can own everything houses directly (literally!) above the ship’s bridge where the captain and their team operate from. All those in Suite class also have access to a sundeck, pool, bar and lounge area inside The Retreat, alongside the spa which is open to all. And for those elsewhere, giant Mariah Carey-inspired angel stand loud and proud next to the main pool area, private jacuzzi and sunbeds. Just try resisting the urge to post that Instagram selfie with your new wings under the sun. As the sun goes down, move into the main dining area with American to French and Greek dining options, alongside an ever-rotating menu. For those wanting to venture out, head to the Grand Plaza at the heart of Edge. Split across three levels, the Martini Bar with musical chandelier sits pretty in the middle with supporting restaurants, inclusive of our personal favourite Blu. Others outside include the impressive Le Petit Chef that merges food with technology. And when you’re done, why not try Eden, a large and transformative space that houses live performance and a cocktail bar, or an impressive theatre space that brings West End-quality live acts to you.

But perhaps what sets Edge apart from others, apart from all the above, obviously, is not what’s inside or even onboard. Attached to the side of the ship and floating effortlessly from one level to another where required, the Magic Carpet is... well, magic! Used as a seating area for you to relax, to drive or a fine dining experience, consider it a moving platform that rises and falls to multiple entry points on one side of the ship, extending Edge to an ever-changing – sprinkled with Kelly Hoppen luxury, which is on full display as it peaks on impressive sailing.

Kiss goodbye to the old fashioned stereotypes of life at sea. After just a few days sailing, you – like us – will bow to the beauty of Edge. From the facial recognition systems that support with your speedy check in, an app that operates as a map, daily rundown of activities, weather updates, or even just your digital room key that also serves as a television remote and blind opener, it’s all here. And with 30% female crew, a hard commitment to improve their emissions including the removal of plastic bottles for water, the world around is as important to the Celebrity world as it is the actual fleet itself. Edge is around 20% more fuel efficient than their previous ships. And if all that wasn’t enough, Celebrity remains committed to its loyal LGBTQ guests that set sail every year – protecting and loudly supporting its queer staff both on a personal and public level, too. There’s even a super cute meeting space on your first day of sailing where all LGBTQ people can come together and share the experience together. Thought sailing was a thing of the past? Think again as Celebrity Edge is here to redefine what it means to set sail – all in the height of opulence.
