Gay Times Magazine

A note from us.

- William J. Connolly

“What’s changed or is different about the magazine then?” A question asked more than you’d expect. It’s one I’ve had posed almost every week since becoming Editor of Gay Times Magazine last year. And actually, it’s a funny one because the complete answer doesn’t really exist. That is because it changes so rapidly and reguarly, as with all things at GAY TIMES. The fast-paced nature of the organisation evolves on a daily basis. One that puts what you want to see on our platforms at the forefront of how we communicate to our audience. It’s an attitude that’s taught me about looking outward to the world beyond what we know already, and into the hearts and minds of others. That what our neighbour can teach us isn’t what we already know, but what we hope to find out. Unsurprisingly, it’s this outlook that I’ll miss the most.

It’s been the most profound privilege of my career to be Editor of Gay Times Magazine. However I have made the decision to step down and depart the company, almost five years after first joining the organisation. Serving the LGBTQ community and being at the helm of the bi‘est overhaul the magazine has seen in its 45 year history was a daily challenge that helped me grow both personally and professionally. During my time, I’ve ensured that we have put the community back at the heart of everything we do. It’s thanks to each and every one of you that have been brave enough to share your story, that the previously ignored became the subject in the spotlight. I’m immensely proud and grateful to leave a legacy that, I hope, serves all corners of the LGBTQ community. I look forward to seeing the continued success and future accomplishments of this historic publication, with this, the December 2019 issue, serving as my last.

Five years is a long time to remain in any one place. When I think back to who I was as an individual before joining, I remember somebody that had a great number of questions – internally and of others. A person that wouldn’t question or rock what they see around through fear of uncovering a truth or story that was somewhat unkind or new. But as I said earlier, what makes working at GAY TIMES so unique is the rapid changes and reactive nature of its work. And living in this world and growing to understand this approach allowed me to develop into a better person, a better journalist and, most importantly, a better queer person. To grow. To push for change and authenticity.

Issue 502 brings you the very best of GAY TIMES Honours 500. This November, we unapologetically changed the landscape for queer awards spaces. A regeneration of how we celebrate each other, recognise each other – and enjoy an authentic queer space together. Led by host Benny Drama and featuring acts including Pabllo Vittar, Honey Dijon, Jodie Harsh, ALMA, L Devine, Vincint, BBZ and Little Gay Brother, we opened the doors to over a thousand of you at Magazine London to celebrate those from across our community, and the final piece of our historic 500 celebrations. Read more about the night and those taking home an Honour in this issue, alongside meeting cover stars Honey Dijon and Jodie Harsh who join us direct from the DJ booth. They’re joined by openly bisexual NFL player Ryan Russell, who completes the lineup.

Once again, thank you for going on this journey with me, I hope you’re proud of how far we’ve all come together. Welcome to Issue 502.
