As part of the Society’s work to support the teaching and learning of geography, we produce educational resources suitable for primary pupils through to those studying for their GCSE and A Level exams. Our wide range of resources include podcasts, case studies, animations, articles, posters and lesson plans, and draw upon topical issues and focus on key areas of the curriculum. One recent episode of our Ask The Geographer podcast features a conversation with author and journalist, Tim Marshall, about his new book Shadowplay, which is a personal account of the devastating Yugoslav war that raged from 1991 to 2001. In another episode, Professor Kate Heppell, from Queen Mary University of London, discusses the many threats to rare chalk stream environments in the UK.

Throughout 2021, the Society is partnering with BBC Radio 4 on 39 Ways to Save the Planet, a podcast and radio series which explores and tests different ideas that might relieve the stress climate change is exerting on the Earth. To accompany the series, we are producing learning resources that explore some of the suggestions raised a bit further. So far we have covered super rice, Siberian rewilding and robots of the wind, with further resources to follow as the series continues to be broadcast later in the year.

With the UK’s legally binding target of reaching net zero by 2050 coming ever closer, we have developed a range of resources in partnership with the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy to complement the government’s interactive carbon calculators. The My2050 and MacKay carbon calculators allow students to create pathways to a low carbon UK by making difficult decisions in sectors such as transport, buildings, industry, carbon removal, electricity, land use and biofuels. Climate change also features in our suite of resources suitable for Key Stage 3 to A Level, which were developed in collaboration with the University of Birmingham and WWF. For students looking for suggestions for further reading, there’s some great ideas in the literacy lowdown page of our website, alongside a growing number of mini-news items on topical issues such as Cyclone Nivar, the Sulawesi Island earthquake, and US President Joe Biden and the Paris Climate Agreement.

The majority of our educational resources are freely available to all, however our School Members get access to a range of additional resources to support the teaching and learning of their students. Recent additions of Member-only content include exploring the concept of rewilding with case studies, and challenging conventional ideas about development in West Africa through exploring some of the prominent indigenous empires of the region between 750 and 1902.
