DNA detection
● A type of DNA-based technology used by investigators to solve a double murder in Linköping, Sweden, has aroused international interest. The work was pioneered by forensic geneticist Andreas Tillmar, whose research is focused on obtaining sufficient genetic information from low-quality DNA samples to enable, for example, searches in genealogical databases. The Swedish Police Authority conducted a legal inquiry early in 2019 and concluded that the double murder in 2004 would be used as a pilot case to test the DNA-based genealogy method. It then took a year and a half of collaboration before the murderer was arrested. The method could now be deployed in other countries.
