On the move
Humans have always moved around the planet, either out of a desire for a better life and more opportunities, or as a result of conflict and displacement. The number of international migrants (people living outside their country of origin) has increased steadily in recent years (although Covid-19 slowed things down). Nevertheless, international migrants still represent a significant minority. Today, they represent just 3.6 per cent of the world’s total population. The statistics here come from the UN’s Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
