Geo-graphic: World energy

-

In 2019, all the countries on Earth together produced a total of 14,000 million tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe – the unit used to describe the energy content of all fuels). This represented roughly double the total energy produced in 1980. The majority came from non-renewable sources, with just 11% coming from renewables. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), we need a ‘radical’ shift towards renewables to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. This includes renewable energy overtaking coal by 2026 and passing oil and gas before 2030. By 2050, it should go on to meet two-thirds of global energy supply and nearly 90% of electricity generation.
