SVETA PYAK
a Khanty woman, first photographed in 2000. Sveta was born in 1967. Her family lived in the forest near the village of Numto in Siberia. She had planned to train as a nurse when she left school, but her father told her that as the eldest daughter, she should stay. Sveta was photographed again in 2020, at a camp on her husband’s ancestral land on the bank of the Kazym River, where they manage a herd of 150 reindeer.
