Philippines
In recent years, the Philippine government has made efforts to improve access to contraceptive services, but abortion remains illegal under all circumstances, punishable by up to six years in prison for doctors and midwives who perform abortions and by two to six years in prison for women who undergo the procedure. Women still have abortions, but most procedures are unsafe. Each year, about 1,000 woman die and tens of thousands are hospitalised as a result of abortion-related complications.
