Green waste collection will return in the spring

GARDENERS can register now for Bridgend County Borough Council’s green waste collection service which is returning this spring.

Fortnightly collections will make it possible to recycle green waste including plants, flowers, weeds, grass, leaves and hedge clippings.

The service will run during the main growing season between April and the middle of November, and residents can sign up to the service for a one-off payment of £27 per household, with a discounted rate of £23 for pensioners.

Once payment is confirmed, households will be supplied with two reusable sacks for their green waste which will be collected every two weeks on an allocated day.

Councillor Hywel Williams, Bridgend County Borough Council’s deputy leader, said: “This convenient scheme is run with our recycling partners Kier and all of the green waste collected in Bridgend County Borough is taken to local firm Cowbridge Compost and turned into a compost fertilizer.

“Just over 2,800 homes signed up for the scheme last year, which was 400 more than in 2015. It would be great to have a similar increase again this year so that we can cut down even more on the amount of waste that is sent to landfill. In response to feedback from residents, we have extended the scheme so that it now runs into November, whereas it previously ended a month earlier.”

Residents can register for the garden waste collection scheme by calling the council on 01656 643643 and having their payment details ready.

The first garden waste collections will then take place during the week commencing Monday, April 3.

Garden waste can also be taken to the “tip” at the household recycling centres in Tythegston, Brynmenyn Industrial Estate and the Heol Ty Gwyn Industrial Estate in Maesteg.
