Fairtrade Fortnight: Monday, February 27 - Sunday, March 12 is Fairtrade Fortnight and as usual SUSSED will be showing their support with events and free samples of Fairtrade goodies.

A Fairtrade Festival Bake-Off takes place at Carnegie House, in Wyndham Street, Bridgend, on Saturday, March 19 from 11am3pm.

Entries will be judged by Madeleine Moon MP.

Sunday Quiz: This is one of the longest running quizzes in Porthcawl having been started 21 years ago this year by Dennis Johnson and so far it has raised £76,400 for charity.

And, as if that wasn’t enough Dennis was secretary of the Dart’s League; organized the Summer Darts League and I well remember him organizing an annual day long darts competitio­n in the Manor Suite for the Civic Fund back in the 80s. Well done Dennis and your helpers.

If you want an enjoyable evening’s Quiz, then it’s off to the Seagull in the Precinct in Nottage. The quiz starts at 9pm and there is an entry charge of £1 per person.

The prize is a bottle of wine and there is always a charity raffle.

Porthcawl Museum And Historic Society: There is a St David’s Day Coffee morning on Friday March 3 in the Y-Centre at 10.30am and I am sure that there will be stalls and a quiz.

On Tuesday, March 21 there will be a talk on Mysterious Margam by Alan Doyle.

Porthcawl Townswomen’s Guild: Next month’s meeting will be held at All Saints Church Hall in Victoria Avenue on Wednesday, March 8, at 2pm and this will be the Guild’s AGM.

Green Room Reopens: Friday, February 24 at 8pm sees the re-opening of Sustainabl­e Wales’ Green Room.

Tradtional Morning Services: At Gilgal Baptist Church, Park Avenue Porthcawl. Wednesdays at 11am, Gilgal Baptist Church Porthcawl holdam orning service. The service concludes at 11.40am and is followed by prayer and tea & coffee in the hall.

Lent 2017: This year the popular Lent Lectures organized by Churches Together in Porthcawl are based on a series of paintings by prominent artist Mark Cazalet.

These paintings illustrate a modern day version of the Stations of the Cross.

The paintings which show the Stations of the Cross as taking place in London in 2001, will be on display in Trinity Church from Tuesday, February 28 when the Lent Programme will be opened by Councillor Rob Lee the Mayor of Porthcawl, at 11am and they will be on display throughout Lent.

Groups of paintings will be taken out to various churches in sets of four as follows.

Monday, March 6 at 7pm at Tabarnacl in Fenton Place: pictures 1-4 ‘Beginning the Journey’– led by John Berry.

Tuesday, March 14 at 7.15pm at Trinity Church: pictures 5-8 ‘Meeting people on the journey’– led by Rev Professor Teddy Kalango.

Wednesday, March 22 at 7pm at Stella Maris RC Church in New Road: Pictures 9-12 – ‘The Destinatio­n’ led by Rev Anthony Martin.

Thursday, March 30 at 7pm at Gilgal Church Park Avenue: Pictures 13-15 – ‘Death and Resurrecti­on’ led by Rev Martin Gillard.

Friday, April 7 at 7pm at All Saints: all the pictures will be on display set aginst the traditiona­l stations already in place.

Porthcawl Welcomes Las Vegas: On Saturday, February 25, Porthcawl RFC hold a Casino Night at the Porthcawl RFC Club House off South Road, from 8.30pm11.30pm. Tickets cost £22 from the club and include food and a glass of fizz.

Age Concern: I note that Age Concern UK are looking for volunteers to man their shop in John Street.

Porthcawl Museum And Historic Society: The 2017 Gwyn Petty Lecture is being held on Tuesday, April 25, at the HiTide, when Professor Christophe­r Williams, from Cardiff University, will give a talk on Joseph Morewood Staniforth at 2.30pm.

Porthcawl Mayor’s Charity Fund: The Porthcawl Town Mayor’s Charity Committee have finalised the programme of fundraisin­g events for the remainder of this mayoral year in May.

On Saturday, March 11, (and not Friday, March 10 as previously reporterd), there will be a Thai Night at the All Saint’s Church Hall in Victoria Avenue followed by a Sunday Lunch at 19 Mary Street on April 2 – more about those next week.

Finally, the highlight will be Mayor’s Ball at the Grand Pavilion on Saturday, April 29.

Porthcawl U3A: The U3A AGM has been set for Friday, March 24, at The Hi-Tide.

St David’s Day Concert: Awen, the cultural trust who now run The Grand Pavilion and Eisteddfod yr Urdd 2017, are presenting a St David’s Day Concert in The Grand Pavilion on March 1.

The Morriston Orphius Male Choir will be joined by soprano Angharad Rees, Porthcawl Comprehens­i ve School, Bridgend Youth Theatre and Yr Ailwyd Porthcawl all helping to make this a night to remember.

Fiddler On The Roof: Bridgend Youth Theatre RYT is producing this show in the Grand Pavilion on Friday, February 24 and Saturday, February 25 with two performanc­es each day at 2.30pm and 7.30pm. Tickets cost £8-£12 from 01656 815995.

Free Tai Chi: Classses held at the Awel y Mor Centre on a not-for-profit basis on Friday mornings.

Porthcawl Farmers’ Market: Held at Griffin Park Community Hall in New Road, Porthcawl.

As usual they are there on the last Saturday of the month (February 25), from 9.30am- 12.30pm.
