CORNELLY UNITED ..... 4 COGAN CORONATION 3

CORNELLY United just prevented a coronation for Cogan in this sevengoal Meadow Street nailbiter, writes Tony Poole.

Having capitulated in embarrassing fashion – 9-0 at home to Ynyshir Albion the week before – a more balanced side allowed the Meadow Street boys to pick up three much-needed points.

Until a crazy last 15 minutes when five goals were scored, Cornelly were more assured at the back via electric sweeper Matt Davies, Shaun Duffy and captain Michael Wil- son. There was also more energy from the young guns like the three Jones boys – Callum, Dann and Joe – while Rhys Alden was once more composed and threatening on the ball. Callum Jones missed three great chances to give them the lead - goalie Dean Ford made himself big to pull off great saves.

Cornelly, however, went ahead from an unnecessary corner that Joe Shaw delivered for Shaun Duffy to stab home.

Though Cogan then came more into the frame, controlling midfield, the game turned during first half injury time.

Joe Jones was sent clear and squeezed a shot just inside the far post to make it 2-0 at the turnaround.

That was still the score on 75 minutes when a strangely subdued Cornelly Youth made. It seemed to work as Aberfan took the lead inside 15 minutes. Cefn settled down to their game plan and passed the ball at pace with playmaker Dan Jenkins carving an opportunity after some neat inter-passing and he rifled home a shot from 25 yards to equalise on the stroke of half time. In the second half, Aberfan looked tired and got bodies behind the ball with Cefn looking to go through the phases and build play patiently. It wasn’t long before they took the lead when centre half James Crapington finished off a well worked teg) were in the starting line-up with Liam Snowden (Bridgend College) on the bench.

But with the game locked on 1-1 in the final minute of three added on, a penalty was awarded to Ireland that Sean McDonald duly converted.

The Irish boys took a 44th-minute lead through Neil Farrugia but Conor

But it was Llan who began the second half breathing fire and a Luke Wilson free kick clipped a post before entering the net.

And the Tyzak family were then prominent in the goal that fired the Llan Siro boys into a 2-1 advantage.

Cory Tyzak made inroads and his assist led to cousin Ethan Tyzak scoring with ease.

But Bont still had a trick up their sleeves and during final knockings, Lloyd McVeigh popped up in the right place at the right time to knock in an equaliser.

In Sunday’s Welsh Youth Group Cup clash, Male Voice Choir suddenly found their voices.

However, Cogan pulled a goal back via substitute Lewis May but a minute later, substitute Carl Owen curled one in for 3-1.

In the 81st minute, the ball bobbled around in the home penalty area before Gareth Clarke lashed it past goalie Ross Williams. Three minutes later, Joe Jones again made good ground down the left flank, and hit an unstoppable shot past goalie Ford. At 4-2 that seemed to be that but Cogan refused to lie down and in the 90th minute Dan Humphries again reduced arrears. But, luckily, referee Jamie Dobbins blew for time, signalling a Cornelly double, having taken the reverse match 1-0.

This Saturday, Cornelly host Penrhiwceiber Con Athletic. free kick straight off the training ground. Almost instantly they doubled their lead with winger Gordon Watt twisting and turning the visitors’ defence inside out before slotting home untouched. Cefn were in total control by now and worked the ball well leaving the visitors with very little hope of a comeback when Watt ensured the points stayed at Cefn with a sublime Finish at the near post. We wish Aberfan the very best for the rest of the season and would like to thank 3cs Cafe of Kenfig Hill for sponsoring the match. Harwood of Cambria College in North-East Wales then got a 56th-minute equaliser. Wales were reduced to 10 men in the 74th minute when Harwood got a second yellow card – and finished the game with just nine men.

Carn Thomas saw red for his part in the build up to the Irish injury-time penalty that settled the issue. Penybont slid to a 4-1 defeat at old pals Pontardawe Town.

Though Tom Davies shot the Baby Bonts into an early lead, Ponty hit back with a first-class Grant Stamp strike and a goal from Darryl Hughes.

It was 2-1 at the break and another Hughes strike on the hour along with a late Tyler Brock banger sealed a home win.

In the Wales Women’s League, Penybont Ladies pulled off a 5-3 home win over Cascade.

The Bont goal-scoring hero was Shona Davies, who netted four times, while Sam Jackson got their other goal.
