Bont in five-star tribute to club stalwart

-

FOOTBALL

Being an avid West Ham fan, the club anthem of “I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles” echoed around a silent ground.

And Alfie would have been delighted that Bont burst the Cwmbran bubble inside five minutes.

With Cwmbran goalie Lewis Watkins out of goal, Josef Hopkins crossed for Cullen Kinsella to collect an eighth of the season.

Tom Atyeo headed a beefy Kane Owen cross just wide while Celtic twice went close through Callum Wakeham.

But on 36 minutes, they went two goals up when an Owen pass resulted in Marcus Griffiths striking for a 17th time this term.

And Owen – who possesses one of the most cultured left pegs in Division One – was the architect of a Hopkins goal.

That made it 3-0 at the changeover and in the 63rd minute, Owain Warlow almost extended the lead. But that was the cue for Celtic to launch a fight-back that rocked Rhys Griffiths’s side.

In the 71st minute, Wakeham pulled a goal back and it was game on again once he netted again in the 83rd minute to make it 3-2.

But just two minutes later, home fans were able to breathe more easily when Hopkins carded a ninth goal of the campaign.

Though that put the three points to bed, there was still time for Bont to card another goal.

Once again, Owen swung over a cultured flag kick, allowing manager Rhys Griffiths to nod the ball past goalie Watkins, and complete a ninth league win of the season for seventh spot.

This Saturday, Penybont visit Caldicot Town in search of a double, having back in October taken the reverse match 2-1.
