COED-Y-MWSTWR

-

GEOFFREY Evans had the kind of day last Saturday at Coed-y-Mwstwr that every golfer dreams of.

He not only lifted the March Medal tournament on the back of an 88-23-65 score, but garnished the occasion with a hole in one.

The ace came on the 142-yard eighth hole (Pinwydden) which is strokeindex 14 on the card while the remainder of his round produced just four pars.

But considering his lone top-10 finish over the past six months was 10th in the Turkey Trot, his superb round came right out of the blue.

Division One winner and third overall was Kevin J Parry with 79-1366 and matched par 10 times.

Andrew Goss took Division Two with 83-1766 (nine pars) to finish runner-up to Evans while the best gross round of the day came from fourthplaced Matthew Richards via 70-4-66.

The highlights on his card was a two on the second hole along with further birdies on the parfive holes 13 and 15 – the remainder of his score comprised 11 pars and four bogeys.

The other top-10 finishers were Peter Fraser, Dermot Keegan (both 8316-67), Stephen J Reed (84-17-67), Simon McCutcheon (82-14-68), Clayton Landells (81-1368) and Paul Edwards (9022-68).

Meanwhile, for a second consecutive week, Jonny McEachen strode to victory in the Senior Stableford event.

He matched his winning score of the previous week in carding another 37 points courtesy of eight pars and a lone blob on hole 16 over the tall trees.

But the wet conditions led to just 28 members teeing it up and many of them gave up the ghost late in the morning once the rain got heavier.

Runner-up Michael Paddick signed for par 36 points, shooting a birdie on hole six; matching par three times only to rue costly no-returns on holes three and 10.

Third-placed Mal Brooks entered points on every hole in extracting 35 points out of his round with John Jones (birdie on hole four) entering the clubhouse with 34 points.

Fifth-placed Philip Weston shot a birdie on the opening hole and carded six pars in his 34 points with Mark Raybould hitting an identical score.

Steve Clift got 33 points for seventh spot and the other top-10 finishers were Brian John and captain David B Ford-Williams (both 33 points) and Richard T Commander with 31 points.

Once again feisty competitor D R Stead fought the weather conditions admirably to punch 28 points on his card.

Three counts of two were recorded on the day, and they came from William Jones, who holed out for birdie on the second green.

Michael Davies shot a birdie on the fourth while Andrew Cox did likewise on hole eight.

On the Ladies scene last Saturday, Nicola Hopkins mounted the victory rostrum after sweeping to victory in a GUW Medal event.

Her winning numbers were 105-30-75 with low gross scorer Caroline E Tremlett signing for 9115-76, including five pars.

Third-placed Julie Davies recorded 96-1581, and further down the scoreboard came Janet Roberts and Victoria Brooks, who both shot 111-26-85.

Earlier, Janet Roberts took the GUW Medal in midweek, firing three pars in a round of 103-26-77.
