Big challenge for slimmer Daniel

- ABBY BOLTER abby.bolter@walesonline.co.uk

DANIEL Morgan never dreamed he’d be running the London Marathon – but after losing five-anda-half stone he’s about to do just that.

And knowing what life is like for a child who has to care for a sick or disabled parent, he’s using the event to raise money for children’s charity Barnardo’s Cymru.

Daniel, 24, from Bridgend was overweight throughout his teens and university years, but in 2015 he joined a gym, lost five-and-a-half stone in just six months and found he really enjoyed running.

“I’ve always been a sports fan but never in a million years did I think I would be running a marathon. I chose to run for Barnardo’s Cymru because it’s a great char- ity and I was impressed by the support they give to young carers, children who have to help look after parents or brothers and sisters,” he said.

“I have some experi- ence of being a young carer myself.

“When I was about eight my mum suffered complications giving birth, was bed-bound for months and then spent 18 months in a wheelchair. My older brother and I were caring for her.

“Then when I was 13 my father suffered a heart attack when he was just 41 and suffered memory loss. He had four years of rehabilitation.

“I was lucky I had parents and grandparents to support me and never felt disadvantaged, but I know that’s not the case for many young carers and Barnardo’s Cymru is there to support them,” he added.

Daniel, a sales co-ordinator with Next at McArthurGlen, also puts his theatre studies degree to good use by running theatre workshops.
