A BIRDIE on the 14th hole allied to 10 pars carried Adrian Staton to victory last Saturday in the Nash Cup at Pyle & Kenfig.

His winning card displayed 78-11-67 to finish one shot in front of Chris Dyke 83-15-68 and Neil B Morgan 77-9-68.

Fourth-placed Paul Davies recorded 74-5-69, Kieran Tantum 88-18-70 and Ryan Williams off an away handicap 89-18-71.

And the card of seventhpla­ced Leyton Jones (765-71) contained an eagle on the par-five ninth hole, a two on the sixth along with further birdies on the eighth and 14th greens.

However, low gross round came from eighthplac­ed Matthew Peet (69+2 = 71) with seven birdies, including a two on hole 12.

It was a day when 71 was a popular score, as the mark was also hit by Kieran Reddy 81-10-71, Mark Furneaux 81-10-71, Patrick Carroll 88-1771, Keith Halley 78-7-71, Nicholas Evans 83-12-71 and Shaun Harries 87-1671.

Meanwhile, Alan Hyde couldn’t hide his delight last week in winning a Senior Section Stableford competitio­n with a par score of 36 points (five pars).

The card of John Storie read 35 points, and on the same mark were Martin Fry and Chris Cole, who both fired birdies on the seventh hole.

Three players extracted 34 points out of their rounds – David Henry (two on the 15th hole), Ian Jones and Barrie Edwards.

On the Ladies scene, Alana Brown carded a formidable score of 41 Stableford points to lift the Eric Reed Cup.

After pars on the two opening holes, a two on the sixth green set up a two-point success over Caroline Jones with Heather Jenkins and Marlene Morgan a further two points back.

Fifth-placed Mary Morgan achieved par 36 as did Sheila John, who got a birdie on the 11th hole.

Earlier, Caroline Morris won a GUW Medal and RNLI competitio­n with 104-31-73.

Gaynor Lavelle was second with 92-17-75 (twos on holes four and six) with third-placed Cheryl Western getting low gross score on the day.

Her numbers were 848-76 and the round contained a two on hole four along with birdies on holes eight, 16 and 17 and four pars.

Other fine rounds came from Susanne Jones 9717-80, Ceri Mohajer 10423-81, Gwyneth Parsons 98-15-83 and Celia Thomas 115-32-83.
