CORNELLY UNITED ..... 1 FC CWMAMAN ............. 0

JOEY Jones got the winner against subdued FC Cwmaman to pick up this season’s Cornelly golden boot, writes Tony Poole.

The winning goal arrived in the 34th minute when Grove golf star Dai Cane used his pitching wedge to chip the ball to Jones.

Cwm goalkeeper Brett Davies made a hash of a mundane shot, but the rebound hit Joey Jones on the head and went in.

That gave him eight goals for the season – one more than Callum Jones and departed Chris Mitchell – and it rounded off a strong finish to the season from the Meadow Street boys.

They lost just one of their last seven games – 3-0 at promotion-pushing Clwb Cymric – and it holds out hope that next term they can go places in a Bridgend orientated division.

Once again electric sweeper Matt Davies was outstanding, as was his defensive sidekick Dale Owen, while Joey Jones, Carl Owen and Rhys Alden posed a massive threat going forward.

Unsung heroes like Dai Clarke, Kieran Jeffreys and Mike Wilson were also on their game while Aaron Jones appeared the day after keeping for Wales U18s against England in Bristol.

The opening half proved a mundane affair and except for the goal, there was precious little to write home about.

The Aberdare side posed more of a threat once they went all guns blazing in firing goal bandit Jesse James into the attack.

His arrival on the hour immediately saw Liam Boggis shoot over the top, but Tondu referee Steve Davies then snookered Cornelly in blackballing two goals.

Carl Owen had the ball in the net on 68 minutes only for it to be ruled out for a harsh off side call.

And five minutes later, substitute Shaun Duffy headed in a Joey Jones corner that didn’t stand owing to holding in the box.

Though Cwm attempted to rally late on – akin to a one-paced racehorse – their race had long been run and betting slips on a Cornelly win had already been exchanged for cash.
