ROYAL PORTHCAWL

-

STEVE Bull charged to victory in the Hughes Morgan Cup over the Easter weekend at Royal Porthcawl.

He won the opening round of the competition with a score of 77-9-68 (birdie on the 9th hole and 10 pars), and followed it up with a fourth-place finish in round two via 839-74.

It led to him mounting the victory rostrum on the strength of nett rounds of 68 + 74 for 172 blows.

Runner-up Richard Jones had rounds of 75 +73 = 148 and he was followed on the scoreboard by Bleddyn Taylor (75 + 75 = 150) and luckless Brian Nicholas (78 + 73 = 151).

But Brian Nicholas shed the luckless tag in the Ted Hughes Challenge Bowl, sweeping to a countback victory on 39 Stableford points.

A birdie on the 10th set up the win for the former Bridgend and Maesteg rugby wing as did matching par on nine occasions.

The other 39-point man was James Tuck, who carded a superb eagle three on the par-five fifth; birdied the eighth hole and carded 12 pars.

Third-placed Anthony Jenkins got 37 points (birdies on five and 17 along with 10 pars) with Arwel Morgan getting par 36 points (birdies on holes six, 10 and 12).

Further down the scoreboard on 35 points came R G Ellis, former Welsh flanker Rhodri Lewis and Rhys Parsons.

Last weekend the Luke Rose Bowl was on offer, and it went to the team headed by Arwel Morgan with 66 points.

The Michael Price team were runners-up on 66 points, and the same score was recorded by Elwyn Roberts.

Royal Porthcawl Ladies last week staged an April Stableford event that Jane Frampton won with 35 points courtesy of a two on hole four; birdie on the 15th and three pars.

Runner-up Pamela Williams signed for 31 points while Pam Chugg scored 27 off an away handicap, and Geraldine Judd 26.
