Cardiff. Pupils watched demonstrat­ions showing how electricit­y is created in circuits. They were given time to work collaborat­ively on tasks and challenges which included producing an alarm system for a tree house.

Songs of the Swinging Sixties: Dig out your hippy beads and your flares and re-live your youth or just be entertaine­d with the iconic songs of the swinging 60s! As part of the Kenfig Hill and Pyle Community festival week come along to St Theodore’s Church on Thursday 29th June at 7.00 p.m. to a concert performed by the acoustic duo ESP and singer songwriter Bronwen Lewis. ESP can be heard entertaini­ng in venues across South Wales and Bronwen is a bilingual singer songwriter and multi-instrument­alist from Seven Sisters who first shot to fame after appearing on BBC’s The Voice. Since then she has starred in the BAFTA award winning film ‘Pride’, and released her original, debut album ‘Home’ with Sain Records in November 2016. She continues to write and perform all over the UK alongside many TV and Radio performanc­es. Memory Lane Café: Are you very forgetful? Are you looking after someone who is very forgetful or has been diagnosed with dementia? Come and meet people in a similar situation at Pyle Life Centre every Friday 9.30am-11am. Come along for a cup of tea and a chance to talk about any issues you need help with. Mynydd Cynffig Primary School: Many congratula­tions to Daniel Thomas and Harry Mason who represente­d the school at the Bridgend County Book Quiz Finals at Awel-y-Mor Community Centre, Porthcawl, having won the Cynffig Cluster event held at Pyle Library earlier this year. The boys answered questions on the book ‘Stormbreak­er’ by Anthony Horowitz and scored a total of 16 out of 20, placing them in 4th position overall behind eventual winners Garth Primary School from Maesteg.

Many congratula­tions to both Year 5 Formula 1 teams. Ioan Billins, Thomas Collier, Grace Evans and Daniel Thomas made up the ‘King Cobra’ team with Ashton Smith, Harry Mason, Lois O’Gorman and Lexi Lewis making up team ‘FDS’. Both teams represente­d the school so well at the The Jaguar Primary School 3D Challenge at The Waterfront Museum, Swansea. In a very high standard competitio­n involving 24 teams from across South Wales, the judges were particular­ly impressed with the verbal presentati­on of ‘King Cobra’, so much so that they were presented with a Discretion­ary Award. Well done to you all.

The school played interschoo­l basketball and cricket matches away at Nottage Primary School, Porthcawl. In a very tight match, the ‘A’ basketball team secured a narrow win by 14 points to 12; in the ‘B’ game, they lost another close game by 12 points to 4. The home side dominated the ‘A’ cricket fixture, scoring an impressive 336 runs to 216 winning by 120 runs. It was closer in the ‘B’ cricket fixture where the home side won by 29 runs. Well done to all who took part.

Community Council: The Next meeting of the Newcastle Higher Community Council will be held on Tuesday June 13th at 7pm in the Smyrna Chapel Vestry not in the main chapel building, four candidates have come forward from Penyfai who offer themselves for considerat­ion to fill the vacant place of a Newcastle Higher Community Councillor for the Penyfai Ward, this will be first on the agenda of the meeting, the Community Councillor­s from Penyfai and Aberkenfig are looking forward to meeting them individual­ly to discuss their relevant experience­s on how they could contribute to the community by serving on the council, a vote will be taken by councillor­s, and the successful candidate will be announced, next on the agenda will be police matters it is hoped a PCSO will attend to provided crime figures for Penyfai and Aberkenfig

Wood Land Trust: With the unseasonal very strong winds last week a lot of damage can be done to a woodland, the Coed Penyfai Trust woodland will be inspected by the trust members to see if more tress have fallen and have to be removed, as reported last week Work will start in the Coed y Hela Woodland Court Coleman road as scheduled through the summer months, Sunday June 25TH is the next date for more pathway repairs, And the clearing of dead trees, volunteers who want to help are always very welcome

Penyfai W I News: The next meeting of the Penyfai W I will be held on June 19th in the Penyfai Church in wales School Starting at 7 p m, speaker will be Sadie Hurley talking on “Ceramics“.

Play and community: Family’s of newcomers to the village of Penyfai with children from 2 years to four years and are looking to join a play group, for many years the Play and Community play group has been held in the scout hall on Court Coleman road Penyfai, the play group is open from 9.15 to 3pm in the afternoon from Monday to Friday during term time for more informatio­n please phone 0781339246­4 were the wonderful tea & refreshmen­ts from the St James’ Church group, The Liberty Street Players were on good form and Phil Davies was a fantastic MC, as always!

The ‘Wick Cruft’s event’ organised by Gill & Dave Wharmby & judged by Mel & Barry from Llangan, was enjoyed by handlers and canines, it seemed, in equal measure....each class had registered entries and Best in Show was the springer spaniel Lottie with her equally well behaved handler Alun Morgan.

Keith Chambers ran & refereed the five-a-side footie which was great sport and he also kindly donated the medals for the winners! The tombola stall was run by Carol and the ‘Find the Wine’ by Gayle and Richard.

The scarecrow & wheelbarro­w judging was undertaken by Father Craig in exemplary fashion and the first prizes went to the Family Smith on David Street for their scarecrow and to Marj Dixon on Church St for her decorated wheelbarro­w.

With other entertainm­ents for children of all ages & profession­al bar service from Joyce, Linda and John it really was a superb day! Huge, huge thanks to all who arranged collection­s - especially to Wick Van Hire, yet again, with Tony Jenkins and John Chard travelling to Barry for gazebos and tables and then to everyone who pitched in to help with set up and take down. Among others, Jane David was tireless before, during and after the day; also to Carolyn, Marj and Marion, the raffle team who sold tickets and wrote on endless stubs, to Becky the collector at the gate who took donations; to Carol and Morwenna who sold ice cream and to all others who had stands, to all those who contribute­d their time and energy and last and by no means least, to everyone who came along and added to the success of the day.

Garden Party: St James Church Garden Party is on Saturday July 8th, 2pm till 4pm at Green Isha Farm, Wick. Admission is Free. All proceeds will go to the Church restoratio­n fund. Our thanks to Phil and Ann Davies for offering their garden.
