Voluntary organisati­ons in Porthcawl: It would be wrong of me to imply that the Porthcawl Lions were the only voluntary groups in town. The number is Legion and at the last count it was coming up to a hundred. We are very lucky here and they vary in size and in scope from Rotary and Rotary Internatio­nal which does what it says on the label and is in action worldwide, KRUF and Ty Elis; from the RNLI to the Stroke Club, the Talking Newspaper and Guide Dogs for the Blind between them they cover almost all the needs of the good citizens of Porthcawl and more power to their elbow.

Major national and regional awards come to Porthcawl: In March this year Porthcawl and Kenfig Hill Branch of RAFA Associatio­n were the proud recipients of the South Wales, Midlands and South West Efficiency Trophy for clubs with over 200 members at the Area Conference in Torquay and this was then followed in May when they received the Dickie Collins Branch Club Efficiency Trophy at the National Conference in Yarnfield Training and Conference Centre in Staffordsh­ire. To win both in the same year is a phenomenal achievemen­t and the chairman and committee deserve every bit of praise they get. a Ladies Boxfit. This is on the following nights from 6pm to 7pm with a charge of £4 each. Boxing club address is Bethania Row, Ogmore Vale but the entrance is at the back on High Street opposite the Non-Pol Club.

Ogmore Vale Community Tennis Club: Hello everybody really excited to announce the launch of Ogmore vale community tennis club. Ogmore vale has had theses’ tennis courts which are attached to the Ogmore vale bowling club on Park avenue for a number of years but are very rarely used. We have two hard courts from which we will be playing social tennis every Tuesday evening at 6-8 and Sunday 10-12 throughout the summer. We will also be running two FAST4 Tournament­s each month which is a quick and exciting new format of tennis. Social membership for adults is £25, Seniors and juniors £15 for the year this will give you full access to the club at any time, Entry to tournament­s is £5. We welcome all standards at Ogmore vale community tennis club we are a relaxed and social group. Anyone interested please message me back and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Nantymoel Boxing Club: An evening of Boxing Exhibition­s on Friday 16th June at Sarn Social Club. Doors open at 7pm boxing starts at 8pm and you pay £8 on the door. Also you can have your photo taken holding the Lonsdale Belt, IBF or Ring Magazine Legend Belts.

Adult Community learning: Adult Community learning are offering an Introducti­on to Drawing course starting in April which will be held in Nantymoel Memorial Hall. The course will be 5 weeks

The awards are not only for the for the Club itself, important as that is but also for the work that they do with regard to the welfare of ex RAF service men and women in the area, and also for their fundraisin­g for WINGS the RAF Charity.

Porthcawl flower and musical festival: June 17th at All Saint’s Parish Church in Victoria Avenue ; this year the theme will be ‘Musicals’ and as always the day will be a feast of music and floral displays, enough to gladden the heart. It starts at 10.30 am in the morning and goes on until early evening with musical performanc­es by local choirs, and musical groups as well as flower display demonstrat­ions and an exhibition of paintings by local artist Leslie Dearne. Admission is free but donations to the Mayor’s Charity Fund will be gratefully received; so go along for an hour or for the day which ever suits you- there will be refreshmen­ts on sale and look out for programmes so that you can plan the time of your visit. MV Balmral: The MV Balmoral is back again in the Bristol Channel with sailings from Porthcawl (Look out for posters). This year there will be another long and involves experiment­ing with a variety of drawing materials, techniques, and processes. Ladies Choir: Ogmore Valley Ladies Choir now have their practice night on Wednesday at Are Canolfan, Bethlehem, Commercial Street, Ogmore Vale. Starting at 7pm. All are welcome - over 18 years.

Coffee Mornings: Why not go along to Christchur­ch Chapel Corbett Street, Ogmore Vale on Thursday 29th June They have a coffee morning with a Cake Stall, Book Stall, China and Clothes Stall’s & not forgetting a Raffle etc. It will be from 9.30am to 10.45am. So why not join them for a coffee and its FREE admission to. All welcome.

Blackmill Over 50s': Blackmill Over 50s’ meet at The Local Community Centre on Wednesday evenings at 7pm, always glad to welcome new members. This is a social gathering and occasional­ly a trip to the theatre or a meal out is arranged.

Nantymoel Knitters Class: We are members of a Knitting Club who live in Nantymoel. We meet twice a week at Dinam Close every Tuesday and Friday at 10am to Midday. We are first-a sailing from Ilfracombe to Porthcawl has been planned for July which gives us a chance in Porthcawl to make the people of Ilfracombe welcome.

Another empty shop reopens it's doors in town: Porthcawl seems to be bucking the local trend- I don’t think we have any empty shops at this particular moment. Whenever there is a move or a change and a shop becomes empty, it is usually snapped up very quickly.; and that is exactly what happened when Flair moved into John Street. A Beer House called ‘ This is Beer’ has opened in Lias Road.

Lions car boot sale at Porthcawl RFC ground: This will be held at the Porthcawl Rugby Football Club grounds off South Road for the rest of the summer. Porthcawl farmers' market: Don’t forget that the Porthcawl Farmer’s Market has re-located to Griffin Park Community Hall in New Road Porthcawl, and as usual they will be there on the last Saturday of the month which this month will be June 24th.
