PORT TALBOT &

-

WET weather and a shortage of players led to mass postponements last week on the league scene, writes Tony Poole.

In the main, waterlogged greens led to games being called off, but Aberavon failed to pitch at Prince of Wales Court Hawks in Division Two – Cymmer did likewise at Aberkenfig on the Division Four circuit.

However, the biggest hard luck story surrounded Cefn Cribwr, who turned up on the wrong night at Division Five leaders Briton Ferry Steel Combine.

The most significant result during a truncated week of action came at Newbridge Fields in Division Three with Bridgend Municipal breaking their duck in wet conditions.

The Bridgend side gained a full house 14 points on the back of a 73-59 win over Port Talbot Municipal.

And in a contest that was tighter than the scoreline suggested, the Bridgend Municipal hero was skip Arthur Hunter, who handed in a 20-12 winning card.

A first victory came at the fifth attempt, and it lifted the Newbridge Fields side up into seventh spot.

In Division Four, leaders Aberkenfig head closest challengers Cwmavon by six points – and the Port Talbot village side have completed one more game.

Two local clubs, however, were in action in Division Five with newcomers Pencoed continuing to go from strength to strength.

Though Pencoed lost their opening fixture at table-topping Briton Ferry Steel Combine, going down 62-43, they have gone on to win their next three matches.

Having carded victories over both Cefn Cribwr and Briton Ferry Town, they last week won the day, 7256, at former Neath & District League champions Melyn United.

Top skip honours went to lionhearted Len Watkins whose rink triumphed 21-10.

It lifted Pencoed into third spot and just four points behind Briton Ferry Town with a game in hand.

But once more Prince of Wales Eagles weren’t landed after suffering a 68-57 defeat away to Briton Ferry Town. RESULTS: Division One: Taibach 52 (4 points) Llansawel 72 (10). Division Three: Bridgend Municipal 73 (14) Port Talbot Municipal 59 (0), Tata Steel 61 (5) Port Talbot Ynys 61 (9). Division Five: Aberavon Liberal Club Don’ts 64 (10) BP Llandarcy Oilers 56 (4), Briton Ferry Town 68 (10) Prince of Wales Court Eagles 57 (4), Melyn United 56 (3) Pencoed 72 (11).
