Local mums help Connie explore life as a parent

SINGER Connie Fisher took the world by storm when she won the role of Maria in the Sound of Music.

But having conquered the West End could motherhood and the path to it be a challenge too far for Connie?

To answer the question of whether or not she should have a baby the 34-year-old, who has been happily married for seven years, began a journey around Wales exploring the worlds of parenthood, child-free life and childlessness.

Her quest was filmed for a new, one-off BBC One Wales documentary called Connie Fisher: Baby Love.

Connie, from Pembrokeshire, who now also works behind the camera, wanted to get the views of as many mums as possible so she dropped in on Bridgend’s Maternal Harmony choir, which is made up of mums who have suffered with infertility, post-natal depres- sion and other mental health issues.

“Connie joined in with our warm up and our main rehearsal,” said choir spokesman Debbie Emment.

“She joined the alto section, which came as a bit of a surprise to most of us as we all thought she would have been a soprano! She seemed to really enjoy the rehearsal and even donned our signature pink scarf!

“She was really nice, seemed very caring and genuinely interested in my journey with trying to conceive.

“I explained that the choir has kept me going since my last miscarriage in June and being in the choir has given me something to focus on and throw myself into.

“I also told Connie how supportive all the ladies in the choir are. We are all fighting our own battles daily but always have time to support each other. The choir has been a tower of strength for me.”

Connie also spent time with choir member Kate Clarke, 37, her partner Megan Davies, 33, and their daughter Nettie, nine months.

She even visited the family at home in Bridgend to find out more about their journey into parenthood facing challenges such as age, infertility and the IVF process.

Kate, who got pregnant during their second round of IVF, said: “My main message to her is that you spend so long being so frightened about starting that process, but the thought is so much scarier than the reality.

“We were saying that none of it has been boring and the thing that you think would be the most mucky like nappies have actually been the best time of my life.

“Sometimes the dream does live up to the reality.”

Kate added: “We also spoke to Connie about how we want more treatment in the future and my partner wants the opportunity to carry a child. It is gruelling but we are going to do it again.”

Connie Fisher: Baby Love will be shown on BBC One Wales at 8pm on Thursday, January 18.
