A DRIVER who was arrested after 11 teenagers were injured after “being hit by a BMW” in Cornelly remains in prison after being on recall, police have said.

A DRIVER who was arrested after 11 teenagers were injured after “being hit by a BMW” remains in prison after being on recall, police have said.

The 35-year-old was arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent but has now returned to prison in relation to a different incident.

He was arrested after the teenagers, aged between 14 and 18, needed hospital treatment after the incident at around 8pm on Thursday at Meadow Street in North Cornelly, Bridgend.

The injured are said to be in “good spirits” and are helping South Wales Police.

A police spokeswoman said on Tuesday that the man arrested is in prison and his bail date for the Cornelly incident is May 17.

One mum, whose son suffered a broken hand in the incident, said: “All boys are in pretty good spirits given the circumstances and are currently helping police with their inquiries.”

It is understood Cornelly United had played a game against Margam at their home pitch at North Cornelly Playing Fields when “they were in collision” with a BMW in Cornelly Football Club’s car park.

On Saturday the club said one of the injured teenagers still remains in hospital in severe pain with leg and hip injuries.

Club Secretary Joe Jones, who was there at the time, said on Friday: “There’s a couple of boys who got away with just being badly bruised and cuts. Two boys broke their fingers and one boy has got a badly bruised ankle.

“It was not nice. It’s not the kind of thing you would expect to see at a football game. The people of Cornelly are amazing.

“They help with every single situation. People running out of their houses and the support we’ve had on social media from people has just been brilliant.”

Cornelly United said on social media: “Thank you for all your kind messages, we’re truly shocked by events, but thankfully, no player is critical. We really are United.”

Just two days after the players were hit by the BMW as they were heading home following a 6-0 win over Margam, the players made a decision to take to the field once again to take on Newton Wanderers in the quarter finals of the Port Talbot League Cup at Western Avenue in Port Talbot.

Manager Alan Kinsley said they had nearly called off Saturday’s match.

He said: “As a committee, we thought it might be best to put it off with everything that’s happened and the media furore around it.

“But we put it to the players and they said and they said they wanted to play to try and make it through to the semifinals.

“It has shown a real commitment and comradery by all of them, but that was never in doubt.

“I would like to say the rest of the Margam boys were outstanding. One of their boys was the first to aid one of our players who was injured.

“Across the league it has been the same. There has been a real spirit there.”
