TREFOREST .................. 3 CORNELLY UNITED ..... 4

AT THE end of a week that saw Cornelly United hit the headlines off the pitch, on it they came late to pip relegation- threatened Treforest at the White Tips Stadium, writes Tony Poole.

Events that saw Cornelly Reserve team players cut down by a motorist as they exited the pitch following a 5-0 win over Margam got widespread coverage in the Welsh media.

The club was inundated with messages of sympathy and the players wanted to go out and win both matches last Saturday.

And while Cornelly Reserves drew at Newtown Wanderers, the Wasps took a topsy-turvy encounter with Treforest.

Though Cornelly took the reverse fixture, 6-0, back in December, things were much tighter in the rematch and the sides changed ends with Treforest 2-1 up.

The Wasps led after 20 minutes – ex-Garw and Betws star Ryan PennyHughes on target – and it became 2-2 on the hour.

A pinpoint Dann Jones pass sent Jason James on his way, and he collected a sixth goal since departing Blandy in the autumn.

It led to the Wasps turning up the volume but goalmouth activity came to nothing, and it was the home side who retook the lead.

Cornelly were eventually rewarded for attacking enterprise with a 70th-minute penalty that Dann Jones tucked away.

His eighth goal of the campaign made it 3-3 and soon after Treforest went down to 10 men for a second yellow card.

The Cornelly winner in the 85th minute was down to a dainty Shaun Duffy dink that led to Penny-Hughes making it nine goals in the yellow and black shirt strip of the Wasps.

And during the closing exchanges, they went close to scoring again only for a goal-bound shot to be hacked off the goalline.

Next up for Cornelly is Penrhiwceiber Con Athletic at home on Saturday with the Wasps looking to atone for a 3-1 defeat last month against the Cynon Valley side in the South Wales Senior Cup semifinals.
