Penybont set to be the Christmas number one

- TONY POOLE sport@walesonline.co.uk

PENYBONT will remain “Number One over Christmas” in the Nathaniel Cars Welsh League Division One if they can beat Pontypridd Town at the Leckwith Stadium tonight (7pm).

That’s the happy scenario for Bont, who restored league leadership last Saturday on the back of a slender 1-0 win over Llantwit Major at a wet and windswept Kymco Stadium.

One of the biggest attendances in recent times – estimated at around 250 - saw a full-blooded pre-Christmas cracker in extremely demanding weather conditions.

It’s led to the Bridgend super club opening up a two-point gap over Afan Lido, who have also completed three more fixtures.

Back in August, the Windmill Lane showdown ended goal-less, and until substitute Marcus Griffiths broke the deadlock in the 75th minute it looked as if the rematch might go the same way.

But Griffiths, who replaced Kostya Georgievsky in the 55th minute, headed home a Curtis Hutson ball played into the box.

Commenting in the clubhouse afterwards, Penybont player-manager Rhys Griffiths explained he was delighted that Bont stuck to principles and was “over the moon” with the result.

The win over the Windmillers made a Christmas squad night out all the more enjoyable, but social media suggestions that Bont are already champions elect remains premature in the extreme.

In their final league outing of the year, Penybont face Briton Ferry Llansawel at the Old Road ground on Friday week (7.30pm).
