Adhere to the will of the people PM

- Patrick G Rafferty Penygraig, Rhondda

NOW that the season of “goodwill” has been dispensed with for another 12 months, let us review the actuality as it really is.

Brexit: “Theresa May has been humiliated,” cry the great and glorious, pundits all who seek to air their own views over those of the majority of the British people.

When Cameron caved in to the extremists in his party in an attempt to prevent a mass exodus to Ukip he called a referendum; in doing so he laid down two alternatives: Remain within the EU, or Leave the EU.

Irrespective of how you as an individual voted, the majority decision was to leave. Cameron decided after a disastrous campaign to resign; his successor, Theresa May, assumed the mantle of Prime Minister, fortuitously for her, without the necessity of being elected leader of her party.

Since then, she has introduced a third part into the equation whereby she wishes to “do a deal” with the EU. They in turn, for obvious reasons, wish to make it as difficult as possible for Britain to leave.

The idea that a deal is of paramount importance has been dreamed up by those who have a vested interest in our remaining within the EU.

Once again, the wishes of the people of Britain are being ignored by a monied minority, who wish to sustain a lifestyle that gives them a privilege to which they are not entitled.

The terms of the referendum were specific and clear: leave or remain: nowhere was there a clause that “a deal” would be dependent upon our leaving: that has been dreamed up by the bubble that is Westminster and, of course, Cardiff Bay.

“Brexit means Brexit” has as much meaningfulness as did Mrs May’s other catchprase, “there will be no snap general election”.

The people of Britain have issued their decision, Mrs May, and if this pretence of a democracy is to have any credence then you must adhere to the will of the people.
