Parking offences clock up fine total for council coffers

IF YOU want to avoid a parking ticket make sure you don’t overstay your welcome in certain places in Bridgend.

Last year Bridgend County Borough Council collected £261,268.51 from thousands of parking tickets – equating to £732 a day.

The most common reasons for parking wardens handing out fines were drivers not having valid pay and display tickets, parking on single or double yellow lines and parking in disabled bays without a permit.

Over the 2018-19 financial year 8,578 tickets were dished out, the equivalent of around 24 a day. Which places saw the most tickets handed out?

Mary Street, Porthcawl: Parking officers handed out 627 tickets at the short stay car park on Mary Street, totalling £13,844.58. The car park saw the most tickets dished out compared to other car parks and streets across the borough and was the biggest earner for the council.

Brackla 3, Bridgend: The short stay car park on Brackla Street in Bridgend town centre saw 505 fines handed out totalling £12,417. This was the biggest earner in the town.

Hillsboro Place North, Porthcawl: Parking wardens handed out 313 fines in Hillsboro Place North.

Rest Bay car park, Porthcawl – 256.

Talbot Street, Maesteg – 240.

Commercial Street, Maesteg – 236.

Nolton Street, Bridgend – 227.

Hillsboro car park (south) – 225.

Merthyr Mawr Road, Bridgend – 192. Top 10 reasons for parking tickets being issued...

No valid pay and display ticket – 2,153.

Loading or unloading when restrictio­ns are in force – 1,220.

Parked on single or double yellow lines – 1,032.

Parked in disabled bay without badge – 963.

Parking adjacent to a dropped curb – 554.

Parking ticket expired – 485.

Parked in loading bay – 396.

Parked longer than permitted – 278.
