Kostya grabs a late equaliser

-

JUST when all seemed lost for Penybont, up popped Kostya Georgievsky to get a last-gasp equaliser in 1-1 home draw last Friday night with Aberystwyth Town at the Kymco Stadium, writes Tony Poole.

Bont conceded a 56th-minute goal to Wesley Barnes in this J D Cymru Premiership clash and with time running out, it seemed as if the Green Army would march back to the Cambrian Coast with all three points.

But pressure eventually told and in time added on, Kane Owen threaded an inch-perfect pass through to Cullen Kinsella wide on the left.

He sat it up on the far post, and Georgievsky met it to beat Aber goalkeeper Connor Roberts from close range.

Though the Green Army shaded the first half, Bont should have taken a 10thminute lead from a flag kick.

The ball landed on the potent head of unmarked Curtis Hutson and with only goalkeeper Roberts to beat, he failed to hit a bull’s-eye.

And for long periods only resolute defending from Bont prevented Aber making a winning league return to the town of Bridgend following an absence of 27 years.

However, a point wasn’t enough to drag the Bridgend super club out of the bottom two places of the table.

The league season might still be in its infancy, but already the table is taking shape regarding the midwinter halfway cut.

A seven-point gap has already opened up with seventh-placed Newtown seven points shy of the cut-line.

Below them are Airbus UK Broughton, Aberystwyth Town, Cefn Druids, Penybont and bottom club Carmarthen Town, who have yet to win a game in nine league starts.

That might be a premature assessment, but at the moment these bottom six clubs aren’t taking points off the brighter lights.

However, Bont are without a game on Saturday, as Barry Town United have pulled out of the J D Cymru Premiership clash at Jenner Park.

The league leaders have invoked a ruling allowing clubs to postpone a league fixture owing to international calls.

Sion Spence has joined George Ratcliffe in being drafted in to the Wales U21 squad against Moldova while Mo Touray is on standby.

A new date for the Penybont match will be announced in due course. That means the next league action for Bont is home to reigning champions The New Saints on Saturday week (2.30pm).

That’s followed by another home fixture, this time against Cefn Druids on October 27 (Sunday).
