SOUTH WALES PREMIER CRICKET

-

ST Fagans got their defence of their South Wales Premier Cricket League title off to the perfect start with a derby victory over Cardiff.

Denied the chance to defend their crown last year because of the coronavirus emergency, St Fagans nevertheless proved they will be one of the teams to beat this time around as well.

They defeated Cardiff by 30 runs, after their batsmen wasted the chance to build a big total.

After electing to bat, Thomas Bevan (33) and Callum Nicholls (59) put on a stand of 103 for the first wicket.

But then Cardiff’s Greg Holmes took over by claiming 6-25 as St Fagans collapsed to 160 all out.

Chasing a revised target of 164 from 39 overs, Cardiff were well in the hunt at 63-2. But Owen Morgan than took charge with figures of 6-32 as the capital club were dismissed for 133.

Glamorgan’s Prem top-scored with 45.

Chris Gibson stole the show for Swansea as the St Helen’s side began the season with a thumping 171-run victory over Bridgend Town.

Gibson struck five fours and three sixes in his 84 not out as Swansea reached 204-5 in a rainreduced innings. Skipper Brad Wadlan made 57.

It was game over from the word go in Bridgend’s reply as they were soon reduced to 5-4, with James Brehaut picking up three of the wickets to fall.

Keeper Tom Baker held up Swansea’s victory charge with 22, but Bridgend fell well short of their revised target of 248 as they were all out for 76 in the 24th over.

The highest-scoring clash of the day saw Mumbles win by 21 runs at Newport.

After losing the toss and being put into bat, Mumbles were all at sea early on as Michael Clayden took three quick wickets to leave them teetering at 7-3.

But a fifth-wicket stand of 164 between Aneurin Norman (105) and Max Phillips (82) changed the shape of the game and the visitors closed on 275-9.

Newport suffered a couple of early run outs in their reply, but Imran Hassan got them back on track with a 98-ball 104. Clayden weighed in with a quickfire 47, but Mumbles’ bowlers stood firm as the hosts ended on 254-9. Rahul Shah took 4-64.

Port Talbot Town beat Pontarddulais by eight wickets off the last ball of the match.

Bont were indebted to halfcenturies from Ioan Phillips and Jack Butler as they recovered from a shaky start to reach 215-8. Daniel Rowe took 5-30.

Chasing a revised target of 197 off 36 overs, Port Talbot claimed victory in a thrilling finale as Anthony Tomas and Barney Huxtable both scored half-centuries.

Meanwhile, a fine all-round performance by Ammanford’s bowlers guided them to a fivewicket victory in the match at home to Neath.
