DOCTOR’S NOTE
Shopping trips are good for you
It’s official, light exercise is better than none.
Most experts recommend that older adults should take at least a couple of hours of moderate-to-vigorous exercise every week. But that may be aiming too high for many people.
Fortunately a study of older women in the US who used accelerometers to measure levels of activity found that even light intensity levels of physical exercise, such as shopping or a casual walk, will do.
Over six years of follow-up, women with the highest levels of light physical activity had half the risk of persistent disability compared with women with the lowest levels.
