Q Please can you identify this exoticlooking plant/ weed? It has grown completely at random this year in a quiet spot adjacent to my neighbour’s fence. It stands about 50cm high.

It’s a strange looking thing and I have no idea what it is or where it has come from. Mike Andrews

A This is Euphorbia lathyris, a member of the spurge family. It’s a biennial that has self-seeded itself in your garden.

It is sometimes known as the caper spurge because the little cluster of fruits turn brown and look similar to capers.

However don’t be tempted as the plant is toxic and, like all euphorbias, has a milky latex that can burn the skin, so handle with caution.

It’s also sometimes referred to as the mole plant because it is thought to deter moles, which don’t like the scent.
