A BRIDGEND school crossing patrol officer is retiring after more than 40 years of service.

Patricia Ann Galliers has been out first thing in the morning and in the afternoon come rain, snow or sunshine, to ensure children get to and from school safely.

Patricia joined Bridgend County Borough Council as a relief school crossing patrol officer in 1980 before becoming the regular lollipop lady for Nantyffyllon Primary School in October 1984.

After spending four decades in the role, during which she has helped generations of the same family cross the road, she has decided to retire.

Before stepping down as Mayor of

Bridgend county borough, Cllr Ken Watts visited Pat to thank her for her long service.

He said: “On behalf of the council, I would like to thank Pat for her many years of service and wish her a happy retirement.

“Everyone agrees it is important to have school crossing patrols at schools but the posts are often difficult to fill due to the unusual working hours that fall either side of school start and finish times.

“We would love to hear from residents who have a friendly and welcoming personality and can demonstrate traffic awareness, a sense of responsibility, and are keen to show commitment in carrying out a very important job to make our roads safer for our youngest pedestrians.”

The council currently has vacancies in the Bryncethin, Penyfai and Cefn Cribwr areas. The role includes stopping traffic to assist pedestrians to cross the road, looking out for potential hazards or dangers near crossing areas, and helping to educate children about road safety issues.

A uniform is provided and it would involve around six or seven hours a week. For further information contact the Road Safety Team on 01656 642529.
