NOT GUILTY VERDICT AFTER ELDERLY MAN DIED IN COLLISION

A DOCTOR who killed an elderly man in a collision has been found not guilty of causing his death by dangerous driving.

Ahmed Darwish, 69, was also found not guilty of causing the death of 87-year-old Kenneth Rees by careless driving following a trial at Cardiff Crown Court.

The trial heard grandfather Mr Rees suffered a catastrophic head injury after being struck by Dr Darwish’s Mercedes E250 in Litchard Hill, Bridgend, on May 20, 2019.

He died shortly afterwards at the Princess of Wales Hospital where the defendant worked as a child and adolescent psychiatrist.

It was alleged that Dr Darwish was unfit to drive having suffered from limited peripheral vision in his right eye as a result of a brain haemorrhage in 1999 and the court heard he would regularly employ a driver to take him to work.

But in his evidence he claimed this condition only affected his reading and he would have to purchase expensive software and employ secretaries to read for him.

Following the not guilty verdicts Judge Jeremy Jenkins released Dr Darwish from the dock and thanked the jury for their assistance.
