Waking an hour earlier could cut the risk of serious depression by 23%, according to a study.

People who regard themselves as night owls are twice as likely to suffer depression as those who say they are “morning people”, regardless of how many hours they sleep.

The study by the University of Colorado Boulder used data from 850,000 users of DNA test company 23 and Me, and cross referenced this with data from people using sleep trackers.

“We live in a society that is designed for morning people, and evening people often feel they are in misalignment with that societal clock,” said the study’s author Iyas Daghlas.
