PROBE INTO BLAZE AT SOCIAL CLUB

POLICE are appealing for informatio­n following a fire in a social club in Maesteg.

Fire crews were called to Caerau Progressiv­e Club, also known as the Middle Club, in Maesteg on Wednesday, July 7 after reports of a fire.

Fire crews were called to Caerau Progressiv­e Club, also known as the Middle Club, in Maesteg on Wednesday, July 7 after reports of a fire.

Extensive damage was caused to the derelict building but no-one was injured.

The building has been empty since 2019 when £350,000 worth of cannabis was found growing there.

At around 3.27pm on Wednesday South Wales Fire and Rescue Service received reports of a fire on Caerau Road, Maesteg.

Residents reported that seven fire engines were seen extinguish­ing the fire and Caerau Road was blocked off. Footage filmed by residents shows smoke coming from the roof of the derelict building. South Wales Fire service said a stop message was received at around 9.25pm.

A spokespers­on for South Wales Police said: “Police in Maesteg are appealing for informatio­n following a fire in the town which is being treated as suspicious.

“At approximat­ely 3.30pm on Wednesday, July 7, police responded to reports of a fire at a derelict building on Caerau Road. Extensive damage was caused to the property but nobody was injured.”
