Magnificent seven for Bargoed

-

BARGOED coach Mike Pugsley was pleased with how is side coped under pressure as they made it seven wins from seven in the WRU Championship with a slender 10-3 victory over fourth-placed Narberth.

Pugsley said: “It was a tough game today, we made a lot of errors in attacking situations and as a result we couldn’t build a lead. Narberth were disrupting our lineout well and they had good kicking game. They pressured us until the end of the game so I’m really pleased to get the win against a good side.”

A driving lineout try by Ronnie Kynes converted by Matty Lewis ensured that the 2015 league winners maintained their 100% record whilst extending their lead at the top to seven points.

Kings of the Championship Pontypool sent out a message to the table toppers with a five-star display as they thrashed Glamorgan Wanderers 50-3.

The Ely-based side couldn’t compete with the physicality of Leighton James’ Pooler as they crossed the line seven times. A driving lineout try by Ashley Sweet and a 60 metre try that included six offloads, finished by Adam Stratton were the pick of the bunch.

Tries from Luke Haines and Damien James were not enough for Ystalyfera as they found themselves on the wrong side of a 21-15 score line against Bedwas. A superb try from Lewis Bowden as he sneaked through a small gap and a driving maul try by Matt Dwyer were the standout moments from a strong Bedwas side who now sit second in the table.

Neath moved up to third in the table with a convincing 34-19 win over Maesteg Quins. Both sides were evenly matched in the first 40 minutes, but tries from Sion Crocker and Jacob Blackmore gave Neath a three point lead at the interval. Three second half tries including a penalty try ensured Patrick Horgan’s side made it four wins from five.

There were also wins for mid table Cross Keys and Cardiff Met, whilst Beddau secured their first victory of the season.
