Greenpeace pushes for crucial changes
CLIMATE catastrophe is truly here and the UN has stated this emergency is now a “Code Red for Humanity”.
Scientists have proved that the decline of biodiversity is now drastic and has become a historic problem. Experts are quite certain that either we halve CO₂ emissions and stop biodiversity loss by 2030 or we are in an extremely serious situation for the entire human race. We are warned that time is running out.
In order to limit temperature rise to 1.5°C we must address both the fossil fuel energy system and the industrial food system which is ravaging the rainforests and the sea. Greenpeace is calling for companies which are responsible for the climate crisis and the destruction of nature to fundamentally change or end, for the government to act and for the people to demand they do so. As a result, we now live in an age of great change.
One of the changes we need is a transition away from fossil fuels. Greenpeace is planning to conduct media and investigative work to highlight how the Government’s plan to continue oil drilling in the North Sea is “incompatible with its net-zero commitments” and the role of the oil industry and the City of London. Also, they will push for righteous solutions for the managed decline of the oil industry and a credible decarbonisation strategy.
Eighty per cent of global deforestation is a result of agricultural production. This is mainly the industrial meat industry. Communications will be mobilised to demonstrate the connection between industrial meat, climate change and rainforest destruction.
Also the food industry must be policed to reduce meat sales. Solidarity will be achieved with indigenous Indians and the mass mobilisation of supporters.
The third strategy is to create a network of ocean sanctuaries across at least 30% of the world’s seas by 2030, whereby industrial fishing and other destructive activity can be prevented. This should be achieved by a UN Treaty in March which will also limit the climate crisis and provide food security..
These are campaigns which affect us all and we all need to bond with, using any measures at our disposal. United we will win. Mr J Bucke Bridgend
