Glamorgan Wanderers 20 Maesteg Quins 29

Admiral WRU Championship

EIGHTH-PLACED club played the ninth in the Admiral WRU Championship match at the Memorial Ground, Ely.

It was the Quins who put a further five points between their hosts with a fine bonus-point win.

Playing against the wind, the Quins were largely pinned in their own half, but on the two occasions they got into the opposing twenty-two they scored two carbon-copy tries.

Rhydian Jenkins keeping up his remarkable try scoring record as he notched a brace. Owen Howe converted the first.

Between Jenkins’ double, Wanders put Tom Richards over and Gruff Tough converted to level the sores. Tough also kicked a penalty to bring the hosts to within a couple of points at the break.

It was clear the first score of the second period would be critical. It was the Quins who claimed it.

A break and some exquisite handling pierced the defence. Jakob Williams rounded of the move and register a third Quins try.

McGuckin converted to put nine points between the teams.

Tough reduced the deficit with his second penalty making it 13-19.

An interception by Rhydian Jenkins just inside the Quins twenty-five saw a Wanderers attack turn into desperate defence. Scrambling back the hosts stopped the Quins attack illegally and were penalised. McGuckin re-established the Quins’ nine points lead.

The home side tried desperately to get back into the game but the Quins defence was resolute.

With time running out, the game was sealed after a Quins attack saw a neat Jakob Williams grubber and great Lloyd Freeman chase, end with touch-down for the Quins wing to register a bonus point try.

McGuckin slotted the wide angled conversion.

To bring the curtain down on the final match at the Memorial Ground this season, Gibbon crossed for the second try, converted by Tough, but it was too little too late and the Quins ran out deserved winners.
