Mynydd Cynffig WI: We were in our regular venue the Talbot Centre on the second Tuesday of the month, from 2pm-4pm.

The weather had been terrible so it was good to see our members braving the wind and the rain.

We discussed WI business, the summer show will need us to start thinking of things to enter.

The NFWI annual meeting is in Cardiff this year so not so far for us to travel and the annual council meeting is in Port Talbot.

Both meetings have very good speakers and a chance to meet with other WI and catch up with old friends.

Our speaker this month was Derek Windsor who gave us a demonstration on oil painting and had us enthralled.

Next month we have Mr John Mason giving a talk on local history.

Our speakers topics are as varied as we can arrange and hopefully our members enjoy them.

Lunch, walking, book and scrabble clubs all up and enjoyed by our members, call in and spend a pleasant afternoon with us tea and biscuits always to hand.

01656 657846 Birthday Greetings:

Many Happy Returns to birthday friends/girls (loosely speaking) this month: Pam K on February 16; Margaret on February 20, Lesley on February 22, Meryl on February 23, Dianne 1 and Diane 2 on February 25.

Hope you all enjoy your special days and also little Isla Seren Evans who is four years old tomorrow on February 9.

Laleston Gardening Club: A little reminder for all those enthusiastic gardeners the Club Shop opens for the new season this Saturday, February 4 and customers will see that shop manager Dennis Roberts has rearranged the interior to provide better access.

In her recent newsletter Chairman, Sue Ford took the opportunity to wish a Happy New Year to all members of Laleston Gardening Club.

It is also appropriate to wish good health to the membership as it is common knowledge that an active interest in gardening is a significant pathway to good health.

The club currently has more than 260 members and this comes at a time when many clubs are experiencing a decline in membership and particularly a shortage of people who are prepared to take responsibility for holding office in those clubs.

That is not so with Laleston Gardening Club where Sue Ford is the driving force as Chairman, Sian James is Vice Chair, Patrick Stevens is Secretary, Rob Stark is Treasurer with Linda Thomas as Vice Treasurer.

Margaret Worgan is President with the eight remaining committee Members all making substantial contributions to the running of the club.

Given the fact that so many members are completely new to the organisation, Sue included in the newsletter an outline of how the club functions.

There are considerable costs involved in the running of a gardening club which occupies an historic Grade II listed building and the club’s main source of income is derived from membership fees and fees charged for the hiring of the hall.

To supplement this income the club holds regular fundraising activities to boost finances and allow all expenses to be met.

Although the committee are always mindful of the need to raise money, they take great pleasure from those occasions when they are able to provide the membership with treats free of charge, for instance the refreshments following the quiz and social evening in November and the two mince pie and coffee mornings in December.

Although it is still early days in 2023, a number of events have already been arranged for the months ahead.

The first lecture of the new year took place on January 9 when Ivor Mace was booked to give a lecture on roses. Unfortunately Ivor was ill and Kevin Thomas stepped in at short notice to give a talk on Winter Interest. Kevin is a great friend of the club and received a spontaneous round of applause when he entered the hall.

There was also a change of speaker for the Ladies meeting on January 10 when Linda Thomas stood in for Kerry Joseph, of Porthcawl Museum, who was too unwell to attend.

Linda is a multi-talented member of the committee, she gave a talk on using air fryers which was very well received.

With such a large membership and with insurance regulations dictating that only 60 persons can be in the hall at any one time, places at events often have to be booked in advance, it is very important to be quick off the mark if you want to come along.

Events are advertised at club meetings, via newsletter, the club’s Facebook page, website and of course word of mouth at Cliff Cottage.

New events for this year are already fully booked including the lecture by Terry Walton on February 13 and St David’s Day Supper on March 3.

Important dates for the following year include the Plant Sale on May 13 and the Annual Show on August 12 which is normally held on the first Saturday in September.

This change of dates has been brought about by the realisation that with climate change exhibits for September shows are becoming more and more difficult to provide, the best of vegetables and flowers having gone over.

There is so much more in the pipeline for this year, with the usual coach trips, BBQ, etc, and Chairman Sue will use all means possible to keep members informed.

The annual Charity Book Sale at Westward Community Centre will take place on Friday, April 7 and Saturday April 8.

Bridgend & District Local History Society:

All meetings will be held on the second Wednesday of the month at 7pm in Hope Baptist Church (entry on Derwen Road), Bridgend.

The following is the Programme for 2022/2023 with its Speakers. Membership being £10:
