Bands join choirs for special St David’s concerts
Newtown March and Open Air Contest will take place on Sunday, June 11 in Newtown Hall Park. Bands will march along the High Street to be judged for the Deportment Prize. They will play an Own Choice Quick March and a Hymn Tune (from the 120 Hymn Book) and one other entertainment piece of music. The contest is open to Fourth to Championship graded bands plus non-registered bands, youth and training bands. As in the past the day will end with a popular massed band march item. Penclawdd Brass Band are presenting a 50th Anniversary Concert to celebrate their 50 years on the Gower. It will take place on April 15 at the Brangwyn Hall, Swansea at 7pm. Penclawdd Band’s founder and conductor is Tony Small BEM. The President of the Band is Sir Karl Jenkins CBE. The concert Master of Ceremonies is Mal Pope and the concert will feature former band members Gareth Small, Principal Trumpet with the Halle Orchestra and Andy Davies, Trumpet with Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club. Also present will be the Pontarddulais Male Choir with Clive Phillips Conductor and they will feature Soprano Ros Evans. Tickets are available from the Grand Theatre Box Office (01792 475715).
On Saturday, February 25 the Band of the Prince of Wales had the privilege of supporting Gwent and Powys Army Cadet Force with their 23rd Annual Rorke’s Drift Concert. The event was attended by cadets and adults from Scotland to Southampton. Members of the band played alongside the talented musicians all day and all their hard work resulted in an unforgetable concert.
Brecon Town Concert Band are presenting an event which sees them entertaining the public from 2pm till 4pm at the Brycheiniog Theatre, Brecon for free on Saturday April 15. It is a free afternoon which will allow the audience the opportunity to bring an instrument and join the band on stage or try a variety of instruments after the performance, or just sit, relax and enjoy the music. There is no charge, but you must book your seat in order to attend the free concert.
Abertillery Band, conducted by Alun F Williams, celebrated St David’s Day at the the Met along with all the other Abertillery music groups including the Amateur Dramatic & Music Society, the Ladies Orpheus Choir, the Orpheus Male Choir, the Youth Drama & Music Society and the Ebbw Fach Choir. The full auditorium thoroughly enjoyed a memorable St David’s Day Celebration.
