Developer in appeal to save plan for 70 homes on rail site
A HOUSING developer has launched a planning appeal against Bridgend County Borough Council over proposals to build 70 houses on a former railway site.
The plans for a housing development on land at Waunscil Avenue have been with the council since 2021, and are part of what is described as a “complex and extensive history” of planning applications that have been submitted for the land dating back as far as the year 2000.
However, developers at Mulberry Homes have now decided to make an appeal to the Welsh Government against the local council, following what they say is a failure of the authority to determine the application.
It means a decision may now be made by planning inspectors over whether or not the housing development, which would also feature a community route, public open space, and play area, can go-ahead in the future.
The most recent iteration of the plans reads: “The application site comprises of previously developed land and a former railway embankment, approximately 700 metres north east of Bridgend town centre.
“The site is a long, linear parcel of land situated between two areas of residential development.
“The site is approximately
730 metres in length stretching from the boundary with 39 Charles Street in the north to 66-68 Waunscil Avenue in the south.
“The width of the site varies from about 21 to 45 metres.
“It is overgrown and enclosed with some self-seeded trees and hedgerows along the boundaries.”
The appeal process was started in November of 2023, with final comments from all parties expected to be handed in by January 2.
