Help Needed for Christmas Lunches:

Volunteers based out of Talbot Community Centre in Kenfig Hill will once again be cooking and providing Christmas dinner for local and vulnerable residents who would otherwise miss out on Christmas Day.

This will be the second time this initiative has taken place, after last year’s efforts helped to provide families and individuals in the Pyle, Cornelly, Kenfig Hill and Cefn Cribwr areas with a traditional Christmas dinner with all the frills.

For 2023, the service will be expanded to cover the entire county borough, and will be seeking to support as many people as possible via a small army of fellow volunteers and community representatives.

Preparation of the lunches will take place on Saturday, December 23 and delivery of the lunches to peoples homes will be made on Christmas

Eve, Sunday, December 24.

The meals will be ready to eat and will just need warming up on Christmas Day and are collected or delivered to housebound people or people who cannot get to the Talbot.

Laleston Gardening Club: As this will be the last bulletin before the end of the year, Chairman Sue and her Committee would like to offer a sincere thank you to all members of Laleston Gardening Club who have given such wonderful support throughout 2023.

Without the support, the efforts of the Committee would be rendered fruitless.

The last Committee meeting before Christmas took place on Tuesday, December 12 and, as normal, there was a full agenda which covered all recent events and preliminary planning for 2024.

The Christmas Dinner, held at Cliff Cottage on December 9, had gone extremely well and had received rave reviews from those who had attended. The three course meal had been beautifully cooked by the catering team (Sue, Sian, Linda, Heather and Lucy) and the new cooker had proved to be a great investment.

In previous years the Christmas meal had been held in local hotels and establishments, but many had commented that it had been so much nicer to enjoy Christmas Dinner in the more relaxed atmosphere of Cliff Cottage with a meal that was a match for any professional eatery.

The Treasurer, Rob Stark was able to give final figures for the income and expenses for the Christmas

Fayre held on November 11. Unsold items had been left on display in

Cliff Cottage and many had been purchased by groups using the hall in the weeks since the Fayre.

A healthy profit has been realised and this is very important as the running costs of Club have increased considerably with £1,063 being paid out recently for the building insurance premium alone. In connection with the insurance renewal, it is sad to report that it will no longer be possible to have open fires within the premises.

The insurance broker for the Blandy Trust has given us notice that there are no insurers willing to insure the building if open fires persist. Consequently the fire hearth will be removed and there will be no further fires. The welcoming glow of these fires will be sadly missed.

Work continues on the upstairs room, commonly known as Annie’s Room. Gerwyn is the go to man when it comes to building works, but recently he has found a willing ally in Malcolm Guildford who has provided valuable assistance.

Gerwyn has been recuperating after a recent operation, but Malcolm has continued the good work by finishing off the plasterboard ceiling, removing paper from the walls and reinstating around the new sash window. This room will be used to store the growing amount of catering equipment needed to service Club functions.

Disappointingly, the installation of the four remaining sash windows which will complete the £20,000 fenestration project at Cliff Cottage has not yet taken place owing to staffing problems at the local joinery company.

It is true to say that 2023 has been a good year, with Laleston Gardening Club holding a full schedule of events as reported on social media, Chairman Sue’s newsletters and bulletins in this column (thanks to Carol Thomas).

Hopefully the Christmas season will be kind to all members and patrons of the Club and May we wish you all a very Happy New Year. There is much to look forward to in 2024, notably the trip to Tatton Park in July, still a few places left to fill

Christmas Lights: The sparkling Christmas Lights on the lamp posts from Laleston village over to Bryntirion Hill are much appreciated and thanks are sent to Laleston Community Council.

Santa’s Grotto: In Carnegie House, Wyndham Street, has now closed and dear Santa has returned to the North Pole! During the past four Saturdays hundreds of children popped in to see him for a chat and told him how good they had been throughout the year!

The Grotto was run by The Lions Club of Bridgend in Carnegie House and was supported by Bridgend

Town Council.

All proceeds of this inviting Christmas Grotto will be distributed to local charities by the Lions Club of Bridgend.

Many thanks to all who supported, hoping they will have a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year!

Festive Bridgend: It was a pleasure to walk through the busy footfall at the Rhiw Arcade last Saturday where the shops and walkway were filled with colourful, interesting goodies. It was particularly pleasing to see

Tim Woods and all the marketeers happy and busy at work again. They are all wished a happy and successful Christmas after a long shutdown since the indoor market closed.
